Ebonite is a very dense rubber product that comes not only in traditional black but in the multi-colored rods seen here on our website.

Ebonite turns well and takes a very high polish by buffing. A clear coat can be used on Ebonite but the tactile advantage is then gone. This tactile importance is only an advantage for applications such as smoking pipes, game calls and saxophone mouthpieces. It is not important for cue stick butt caps although it is nice for ferrules.

Polished Ebonite feels very good to the touch of the fingers and to the lips. Like ivory, onyx and jade - it has excellent tactile properties. It feels great!

Turning is best at 1000 to 2000 rpm. High speed steel tools are better than carbide tools. Drilling is done with standard HSS drill bits - regular drill bits we all use for wood and metals. After your item is shaped then one sands Ebonite as if it were a wood. After working up in wet/dry sandpapers to the 400 or 600 grit range then a red Tripoli buffing followed by a white rouge buffing will bring you up to a mirror finish. Hand waxing is good after the buffing.
